The Town of Hartford was founded by New England settlers in the 1840s. Within a decade, railroads connected the small sawmill town to Chicago, Milwaukee, La Crosse, and Minneapolis. A land of forests and wild prairie was slowly developed into farms, roads, government building and market spaces.
Located within Kettle Moraine, Hartford is distinguished by the varied land formations that characterize this area. Lakes, kettles and hills are abundant around the city. The moraine was formed by the collision of Green Bay and Lake Michigan glacial lobes. The created a unique geographical landscape in the area.
The founders believed in promoting education and abolitionism. The schools from that time still stand today. While Lincoln and Rossman Elementary School serve the cities kindergarten to junior grade population, the Hartford Union High School provide higher education to both the city as well as the Town of Hartford.
The city has a community of about 14,200 people, the surrounding town is home to about 4000 more. About half of the population is married, while a third have children under the age of 18 residing with them. Many of the citizens are employed by the Quad Graphics factory, functioning in the industrial park on the outskirts of the city. Hartford has many small businesses and diverse industries boosting our economy.
Hartford was once home to the Kissel Motor Car Company as well as the Chrysler Marine Engine plant. Ludwig Kissel himself moved into Hartford and established many small businesses in the city. Hartford’s name is down in history books as an early car manufacturing city.
The Park Lake Unit of Kettle Moraine State Forest is located to the east of the city, on the eastern shore of the lake, alone State Highway 60. This park of the Wisconsin state is used as a camping ground, for hiking and cycling on nature trails, and for other recreational activities. A part of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail run through the park. It’s a protected area and much beloved of the citizens of Hartford.
The Business Improvement District in downtown Hartford was established in the 1980s to help promote economic development in the city. It aids business and property owners to navigate local rules and regulations, as well as provides strategies and financial education to successfully run businesses in town. Small family run businesses like the Westphal Mansion Inn, the Furnish Traders, and the Practical Pearl recently received recognition from the board for their resourceful and successful business practices.
The cultural heart of the city is in its love for the arts. The Schauer Arts & Activities Center is located right next to the Wisconsin Automotive Museum. Through this appreciation of the past and exploration of the future through the arts, Hartford unites its community in working towards a prosperous future.
